Type w/ Teeth - Craig Ward @ the TDC
Went to Craig Ward’s talk last night at the Type Director’s Club. It was fascinating hearing of the different processes for each of his projects. His work always feels real and tangible, and that’s because it usually is. It’s an out-of-the-box take on typography which allows extreme details not through painstaking pointing and clicking with a mouse, but through trail and error with chance and objects. What I took away from the talk was a) collaborate! Even outside your field, find other people to work with to tackle those ideas in areas of expertise you have no idea about! (On that note, are you in New York and know a lot about making cheese? If so, I want to talk to you ASAP!) b) More reinforcement on the importance of personal projects. It’s the personal projects that will get you the jobs, portfolio pieces, and commissions. Oh yea, and c) Ward is apparently a little tired of the current swashy-type fad. Check out his stuff!
