Music Mix: Up to Our Knees In the Milky Way
download

There’s a Calvin & Hobbes daily strip series, where Calvin keeps growing & growing, dwarfing his town, city, the weather, and finally the universe. This particular strip I’m thinking of was wordless. Just him growing, and then wading through the Milky Way.

“She wasn’t doing a thing that I could see, except standing there leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together.”
–J.D. Salinger, A Girl I Knew, 1948

“But her most intoxicating gifts were a thousand candles her and her slaves had made in a colonial mold. We fitted them into the empty mouths of my thousand candlesticks and deployed them over the lobby floor. Then we lit them all.
Standing there among all those tiny, wavering lights, I felt as though I were God, up to my knees in the Milky Way.”
–Kurt Vonnegut, Slapstick, 1974

I have a frustrating story for every time I tried to visit the Commercial Type & Dino Sanchez ‘Thieves like Us’ pop-up gallery during it’s short run in Soho, but to sum it up I never managed. So as I was biking home late one evening, I was thrilled to notice some of it still up, this being a day or two after it had officially closed. There were boxes & stacks of newspapers/booklets inside that I’d love to look at, but being it was closed, I could only peer through the windows at the glowing neon that definitely had people stopping on the street. Very cool.

Enjoyed Ed Benguiat & Ken Barber’s talk Monday night for the Type@Cooper lecture series. The focus was of course Photo-Lettering, House Industries & Plinc. Ed gave the first talk, a glance at his career with a focus on Plinc, then Ken talked about House Industries reviving the Photo-Lettering technique with House Industries’ service, launched earlier this year. Both gave great talks, and it should be noted that Ed is HILARIOUS. They also had a gallery of stuff to look at, with items (shirts, bags etc) to sell. Items were blank, and Awesome Dudes were there to screen print your choice of four interchangeable color/designs. Awesome.
